The Ultegra XS-D is sure to be a surfcasting favourite with its new Super Slow 5 oscillation which wraps 50 turns of line onto the spool per full oscillation cycle. This produces remarkably smooth line lay with both braid and mono lines and improves casting distance when compared to faster oscillation line lay reels. Another innovation is Shimano’s new Parallel Body design. This aligns the spool parallel to the rod butt which in turn minimises line touching the rod when casting, an especially useful feature when using beachcasting rods. The new Ultegra XS-D also features X-Ship gearing which improves winding effi ciency making fi sh-playing and retrieving leads from distance easier and the super Fast Instant Drag can be locked solid with only one turn making ‘spool slip’ on the cast a thing of the past.
